Oil and Gas Drilling and Your Family

Tuesday, August 13th at 7 PM
Harrington Arts Alliance
575 N. Denver Avenue
Loveland, CO

This is a public forum sponsored by the Sierra Club - Poudre Canyon Group and the League of Women Voters of Larimer County

With the passage of Senate Bill 181 earlier this year, the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission has been charged with placing health, safety, and environmental concerns at the forefront of its mission, rather than primarily fostering oil and gas development. This measure also granted local governments increased powers of regulation and enforcement on new oil and gas projects within their jurisdictions. Larimer County has set up a task force to formulate local rules and regulations.

Come hear from a panel of experts addressing the ramifications of oil and gas development in Larimer County, and what shape local control might take as the process of developing new regulation, monitoring, and enforcement protocols moves forward. Panelists include:

• State Senator Mike Foote, co-sponsor of SB-181 establishing local control of oil and gas development
• Mayor William Karspeck of Berthoud, a city which has recently enacted a moratorium on oil and gas development
• Commissioner Eva Henry of Adams County, where another moratorium is in force while new regulations are written
• Mike Towbin, MD, Physicians for Social Responsibility, speaking on local health concerns of oil and gas development

The discussion will explore the effects that new legislation will have on industry as safeguards are given priority over profit. Citizens will learn how they may participate in helping their local governments protect the environment, health, and safety of our people and our community-owned spaces. Time will be included for audience questions.
