Salon duc Tape: "Requiem for the American Dream"

Salon duc Tape – “Requiem for the American Dream” – April 13th

Noam Chomsky discusses his 10 Principles of the Concentration of Wealth and Power

Noam Chomsky is widely regarded as the most influential intellectual alive. At the salon on April 13th, we will view a film featuring Chomsky titled “Requiem for the American Dream.” His provocative analysis of the defining characteristic of our time, - the deliberate concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few - shows how government policies since the late 1970’s have, against the will of the population, been changed to create a historically extreme concentration of wealth and political power in the hands of a few. This shift to oligarchy has so damaged our democratic institutions, that we have been unable to solve even the two greatest threats to human existence: the increasing possibility of nuclear war, and the certain prospect of disruptive climate change. Yet “Requiem” is also a potent reminder that power ultimately rests in the hands of the people, and our country has swung between democratizing and oligarchical forces throughout its history. By seizing their power, and creating broad-based, grassroots movements, people can reclaim democracy and solve critical societal issues.

Rose Lew and Terry Hatfield of the Fort Collins Sustainability Group will lead a short discussion of the film afterwards. At a follow-up salon two weeks later, activists with several local progressive organizations will hold an extended discussion addressing the film, the goals of their work, obstacles to it, and how those obstacles might be overcome.
